UFC/MMA News March 5

  • Fedor and rumors surrounding him are hotter than the ridiculous signing of James Toney by the UFC. Management for Fedor have said that he is not going to be on the April Strikeforce show due to a hand injury that he needs more time to recover from. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker stated that the two parties were close to an agreement on when and who Fedor will fight even though Fedor’s side said the M-1 Global champion will be fighting in Japan later this year. There is still talk that Fedor will sign with the UFC sooner rather than later.
  • More on the stupidity that has become Dana White and the signing of boxer James Toney, it is thought Randy Couture could be the first opponent. Toney was signed to a multi-fight deal and his first fight will be announced at a later date. Toney was a great boxer with a staggering record of 72-6-3 over his 25 year career but UFC President Dana White seems to be the one more punch drunk. Toney will be out of his element in the MMA world and why the UFC would feel the need to sign a circus act is beyond me. This is akin to Strikeforce signing Herschel Walker, for the notoriety not for the bout worthiness. The UFC has seen a number of injuries lately and have been forced to restructure PPV fight cards and lately the main events have been less than spectacular but to sign a virtual carny worker will do nothing to help the fights, just get more press for the UFC.
  • Speaking of Herschel Walker, he admitted that he had played Russian Roulette and I am left wondering why in the hell…did he not lose?
  • The UFC has announced they will be running a show in direct competition with Strikeforce: Nashville on April 17. The UFC show will air on Spike TV and at last word the group is trying to finalize Matt Serra v. Mike Swick even though Swick has a bad arm and is unable to train.
  • Jenna Jameson, Chuck Liddell and Dana White are having heated words via Twitter. Dana was refuting internet claims that Liddell had packed on pounds recently and Jameson commented that Dana was defending Liddell almost as if they were boyfriends. Liddell sent a message that said Jameson could talk smack all she wants and that he will kick the crud out of Tito. Jameson responded by making comments about Dana favoring Liddell and that he has a wiener (yes, her word and misspelled to boot and you would think for someone so familiar with them she could at least spell it correctly) to match Liddell’s belly. Here is a “tweet” for you…grow up.
  • Do not forget WEC 47 is live from Columbus, Ohio this Saturday night with the main event being a bantamweight title fight between champion Brian Bowles and the top contender Dominick Cruz. I will have a recap of the show on Sunday.
  • Seth Petruzelli and Houston Alexander are set to fight on April 23 at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. Also on the card is Tim Sylvia v. Mariusz Pudzianowski. There is some question about whether these fights and others will actually take place but we will just call this tidbit for what it is worth.
  • Butterbrain, er, Butterbean will fight on March 5 and March 6 at the Emerald ballroom in Mt. Clemens, Michigan as part of the Beat Down at the Ballroom 8 and 9. Butterball, um, Butterbean will fight on Saturday taking on Jeff Kugel. Butterbutt, uh, Butterbean will also be part of a pro wrestling show put on by Orlando, Florida based WXW at the Ohio State Fair when he steps into the ring with former UFC champion Dan Severn.
  • Just a random thought but it sure seems like MMA and now the UFC is becoming more of a sideshow attraction and slowly losing what respectability the sport has spent years building. Butterbean, James Toney, Herschel Walker, how about Carrot Top next, he is a freak and not funny, much like this influx of idiotic signings that have come about lately.
  • The new season of The Ultimate Fighter will premier on March 31 on Spike TV.
  • The Kimbo Slice v. Matt Mitrione fight is not listed on updated UFC 113 fight cards leading to the speculation that Kimbo will fight James Toney instead.
  • Travis Browne has been signed by the UFC. Browne is expected to fight The Ultimate fighter bully James McSweeney either at UFC 115 or on TUF 11 Finale. Browne is undefeated as a heavyweight.
  • Add Forrest Griffin to the names of people James Toney may fight. I do not care who he fights as long as he is KTFO.
  • Dan Hardy has said he plans to knock out George St. Pierre at UFC 111, so not seeing that happen.
  • Bobby Lashley will have the grand opening for his ATT Altitude Gym in Aurora, Colorado this weekend.
  • The WEC will make their Canadian debut in June when they present a show at the Stampede Corral in Calgary. No word on what the fight card will be but I will update when I know.
  • Jens Pulver stated that he has no plans to retire win or lose this weekend when he takes on Javier Vasquez at WEC 47. Pulver went on to say that he is in great physical shape and that he needs to train better since he has overcome the dejected mental state he has been in the past few years.
  • Welterweight Claude Patrick (11-1) has signed with the UFC and is expected to appear on the UFC 115 card.
  • All 22 fighters who will appear on WEC 47 made weight and there are many who are wondering if the fights will make the show worth the $44.99 price tag.
  • “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung is expected to sign with the WEC soon.
  • There is some concern about James Toney being licensed to fight in the UFC or in any MMA arena due to alleged steroid use.
  • CBS is still trying to strong-arm Strikeforce into using Herschel Walker for the April show.
  • As always I am Jerry Wiseman…and then the cage door closes.
